Dr. Marcelo Vazquez
Canadian Nuclear Laboratories
Dr. Marcelo Varquez, MD, Ph.D. (Canadian Nuclear Laboratories – CNL) Dr. Marcelo Vazquez is a distinguished researcher and leader in radiobiology, holding the position of Radiobiology Section Head at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL). With a background that includes both an MD and a Ph.D. in biomedical science disciplines such as radiation oncology, Dr. Vazquez brings a unique clinical and research perspective to the BRIGHT-Canada program. His expertise is crucial to the program’s focus on understanding the impact of radiation on biological systems, particularly in the context of space travel and the development of novel radiobiology research.
As a world expert and key collaborator, his involvement ensures that trainees are exposed to cutting-edge research and industry relevant challenges. Within BRIGHT-Canada, Dr. Vazquez plays a vital role in linking the program to high-profile international initiatives, notably through his expertise in space radiobiology. His work, which includes informing scenarios of co-exposure and micro-gravity, directly supports the program’s objective to enhance Canada’s participation in the International Space Station
(ISS) and the ARTEMIS Moon program. Furthermore, his leadership at CNL, including his involvement in advanced practical training courses, provides BRIGHT-Canada trainees with essential hands-on experience and mentorship.
This ensures the next generation of radiobiologists are prepared to address the complex issues of radiation exposure across diverse sectors, from nuclear energy to space exploration.
