Dr. Ruth Wilkins
Health Canada
Dr. Ruth Wilkins is a leading expert in the field of radiobiology and radiation health sciences, currently serving as the Chief of the Ionizing Radiation Health Sciences Division at Health Canada. Her extensive career is dedicated to overseeing and conducting
critical biological research on the health effects of ionizing radiation. This expertise is foundational to the BRIGHT-Canada program, where her involvement ensures that the training curriculum is grounded in the latest regulatory and public health perspectives on radiation exposure. Her work directly informs the program’s objective to obtain accurate and unbiased information on the biological responses resulting from radiation exposures,
which is vital for developing robust protection systems for the public and healthcare workers.
Dr. Wilkins’s contribution to BRIGHT-Canada is particularly significant in bridging academic research with governmental regulatory needs. As a representative from a key government
agency, she facilitates the essential knowledge mobilization and translation required to address real-world issues, such as the public’s concerns regarding low-dose radiation (LDR)
and the safe deployment of new nuclear technologies like Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
Her leadership in a division focused on consumer and clinical radiation protection ensures that BRIGHT-Canada trainees are equipped with the necessary skills to navigate the complex intersection of science, policy, and public safety, preparing them for impactful careers in both the governmental and regulatory sectors.
